Equity in Health for Displaced Populations
Standing in Solidarity with the Displaced
Today, on World Refugee Day, LIHACEI joins the global community in honoring the resilience and courage of the millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes. While we celebrate their strength, we must also confront a silent crisis: the disproportionate burden of cancer among refugee populations.
Uganda: A Beacon of Hope, A Call to Action
Uganda stands as a global model for refugee inclusion, currently serving as the leading refugee-hosting country in Africa. By providing land, freedom of movement, and integration into local services, Uganda has demonstrated unparalleled hospitality.
However, the rapid influx of refugees has placed immense pressure on the national healthcare infrastructure. For refugees, a cancer diagnosis is often devastating—not just medically, but logistically. Language barriers, the high cost of diagnostics, inconsistent access to specialized oncology treatments, and the psychological toll of displacement create a “triple burden” that prevents many from receiving life-saving care.
The LIHACEI Commitment
At LIHACEI, we recognize that healthcare is a fundamental human right, regardless of legal status or place of origin. On this World Refugee Day, we are redoubling our efforts to ensure that cancer care is not a privilege for the few, but an accessible service for all.
Our ongoing initiatives include:
- Advocacy for Policy Change: Working with partners to integrate oncology support into refugee settlement health programs.
- Early Detection & Screening: Taking cancer awareness and screening services directly to the communities where refugees reside.
- Supporting the Cancer Journey: Bridging the gap between diagnosis and treatment through patient navigation and financial assistance programs.
How You Can Help
The fight against cancer knows no borders. This World Refugee Day, we invite you to stand with us:
- Amplify the Message: Share the stories of refugees facing health challenges to raise global awareness.
- Support Our Mission: Your contributions allow us to provide vital diagnostic support and treatment assistance to vulnerable displaced families in Uganda.
- Advocate for Equity: Join us in calling for stronger investment in decentralized cancer care that reaches the most remote refugee settlements.
“No one should be left behind in the fight against cancer. Today, we work toward a future where refugee status does not dictate the quality of health one receives.”
